RETRACTION/CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Jose Francisco Ramos Perez as the individual arrested in connection with this pursuit and attributed unrelated charges to him. According to an official release from the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, the driver arrested in this case was Jonathan Alpizar of Monroe, Wisconsin. We retract the previous identification and apologize for the error.

According to the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began at approximately 10:25 p.m. Monday, October 5, when a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle traveling on Rock City Road near Rock City after noticing it did not have a visible registration plate. The driver failed to stop and fled from the deputy.

The pursuit continued for approximately 11 miles through rural Stephenson County, with speeds reaching more than 100 mph. Sheriff’s Office personnel successfully deployed tire-deflation devices, which deflated all four tires and significantly reduced the vehicle’s speed.

The pursuit ended near Orangeville when the vehicle left the roadway while

negotiating a curve and struck a large rock. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the driver was not injured, exited the vehicle as deputies approached and was taken into custody without further incident. No deputies were injured.

Scanner traffic from the incident also indicated the vehicle caught fire following the crash. Officers on scene initially extinguished the fire, and Orangeville Fire was paged to respond.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Jonathan Alpizar of Monroe, Wisconsin. Alpizar was arrested and charged with felony aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer, misdemeanor resisting a peace officer, and misdemeanor speeding 35 mph or more over the posted speed limit, along with several additional traffic offenses. After processing at the Stephenson County Jail, he was released with a future court date in accordance with Illinois law.

The charges are allegations. Alpizar is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law, where the government bears the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
